KARACHI - The hawks in the PPP seem determined not to reconcile with the reconciliation approach of their party's top brass that seeks to pacify the major coalition partner, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).
This was reflected in the Sindh Assembly session on Thursday when Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza again received a heroic welcome from his party colleagues who raised slogans of "Jeay Bhutto" and "Qadam Barhao Zulfiqar, Hum Tumharay Sath Hain" (Step ahead Zulfiqar, we are with you) amid thumping of desks.
Encouraged by the greets, Mirza told the media outside the assembly hall that he stands by his speech in which he had said that People's Amn Committee was part of the PPP much to the ire of the MQM.
"I will not say sorry, it is my political right. Criminal elements are in every political party. The MQM itself claimed that it had expelled criminals from its ranks. Similarly, the PPP is expelling criminals from its rank," Mirza said.
Mirza reiterated that peoples of Lyari and Malir formed the People's Amn Committee that aims to address the social issues of the area, denying that the organisation was involved in criminal activities in the city.
He equated PAC with Edhi Foundation and Khidmat Khalq Committee of the Jamat-e-Islami. To a question, the home minister said a lot of people from other parts of the province joined the MQM not to our likes, but it is the right of every political party to accept the people in their organisation.
Mirza said being the home minister he can go anywhere in the province, but he has no mood to visit nine zero, the MQM headquarters.
He said the PPP leadership is in a constant contact with the MQM leadership, hoping "our friends will end their boycott and join the assembly session soon". He said senior minister Pir Mazhar called on Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat, urging him to use his office to end MQM's boycott. Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah also met the governor at the Karachi airport on the arrival of the Tajikistan president, and also discussed the issue in detail.
